Located on a beach of Poste Lafayette, on the East coast of Mauritius, villa Les Dunes 1 is one of those rare typical beach houses of Mauritius, known as “Campements,” made of old stone walls and a thatch roof. Built in the late fifties it has been fully renovated in 2013, adopting a contemporary interior and modern equipment without losing any of its authentic charm.
The house counts 3 air-conditioned double bedrooms; the one on first floor has its en-suite bathroom. In-between the roof and the wooden flooring, a great view on the ocean in a unique cocoon atmosphere. The other 2 bedrooms downstairs have twin beds and share a bathroom. In the mezzanine, the TV room.
Les Dunes 1 is almost semi-detached to Les Dunes 2, villa with swimming pool. They are positioned in such a way that the guests of one another are not disturbed. A small garden gate can however link the two villas allowing the accommodation of up to 12 guests.
A fully-equipped American kitchen, a deck around the swimming pool sheltered by endemic shrubs contribute in the palpable charm of this villa.
The environment in Poste Lafayette is still wild and natural where the wave-break and the breeze in the “filaos” brushwood are the lullaby. It is a most relaxing and invigorating place where one is happy to land for holidays to recover from a hectic period at work.
If you have young kids, the pool is equipped with a pool safety net, available upon request and to be installed by Jim the housekeeper.
The villa Les Dunes 1 is serviced from 9.00am to 2.00pm daily during the week and on saturday mornings. Cooking of lunch is included, however the cooking of an additional meal is subject to a surcharge of 4 €/hr plus eventual transportation costs.

The villa was very well equipped, nothing was missing and we had the pleasure of having provisions in the fridge and a really delicious prepared meal. Thank you again for this kind attention.
Cleaning is done daily and laundry can be requested. Meals can be prepared by Guyanne, shopping must be done. A car is essential as there are no shops nearby. Takeaway Sunshine fusion delivers free of charge.
We rented villa Dunes 1 for a week in December 2023. The house is spacious, comfortable and has charm with its thatched roof. The interior is just a little dark. The kitchen is well equipped.
We enjoyed the large shaded terrace which overlooks the beach. As the coral reef is very close to the beach, the waves of the Indian Ocean crash there and the sound of the waves pleasantly lulled our days and nights.
The beach is wild and generally deserted. As the coral reef is very close to the beach in front of the house, swimming is difficult because the bottom is covered with coral and the water is shallow. We see several types of fish there. Swimming in churning waters is possible by walking 100m to the left or right of the villa.
In short, the Dunes 1 villa is the ideal place if you are looking for tranquility, rest and relaxation during your vacation.
The sea was a bit rougher than expected, the beach too, but snorkelling there was great fun - fins/swim shoes are recommended because of sea urchins. We loved the house itself, especially the location away from the hustle and bustle and tourism. Upstairs an airy bedroom with lovingly designed en-suite bathroom and beautiful wooden floor. Downstairs the open plan living and dining area with a second bathroom and two more bedrooms. The kitchen was top of the range and catered for more than basic needs, even providing aluminium foil etc.
We were greeted warmly with lots of info from Sophie and a wonderful meal from the housekeeper Guyanne - she cooks fantastically and comes daily on request. Also the caretaker Jim can always be approached. One of the nicest Airbnbs we have had so far!
The location is quiet and perfect for relaxing. The sea is beautiful but more for snorkelling than swimming. However, there are other beaches nearby where the sea is calmer. We can highly recommend the house.

Guyanne is a real pearl! We enjoyed the dishes she cooked for us so much :-)) and Jim took care of the pool and the cleanliness of the beach in front of the house every day.
The sea is quite rough but that is normal in this area and you can swim and snorkel right in front of the house.
Only one little thing to mention:
There are some mice inside the whole house (also in the bedroom 1st floor) and they are not shy anymore. One night they nibbled our soap...
We did not care a lot but there are maybe other guests who are not that relaxed...

A heartfelt ``thank you`` to Guyanne, who cooks well and to Jim, who is always helpful and prepares the garden early in the morning. For people who need action rather not suitable.

I would recommend a car if you are looking to get out and about around the island. Within walking is La Maison d'Ete which has a really good restaurant, as well as the Centara spa.
Overall a great pick in terms of a villa on Mauritius.
