Luxury itself can be defined in many ways under several criteria, which, in the case of a house, can be an unharmonious collection of expensive stuff, diverging from the notion of refinement. It takes more than a swimming pool and a collection of branded furniture to make a luxurious villa. Our selection of luxury villas fulfil, to variable extents, the criteria listed below, combining enough of them to be categorised as such, taking the into account the Mauritian context.
The context is important as the setting can make-up the luxury. The guests’ experience is very different if the luxury villa is located anywhere inland, on a golf estate or on the sea. The latter being intrinsically a form of luxury, although their exact location remains a determinant criteria as it involves the size of the plot, the tranquillity of the region, as well as the quality of the beach, the views and bathing conditions. Below is our comprehensive classification criteria.
1. Beach quality and bathing conditions
Because beaches and lagoons cannot be man-made, they are the most valuable criteria to luxury, especially if they match the guests’ expectations of holidays on a tropical island. Within our selection, the luxury villas located on the nicest beaches are: Melissa beach villas & Villa Taïssa.
2. Plot or garden-size
Beach-front villas, whether luxuriously fitted or not, tend to be fairly close to each other. Although this is rarely a point of discontent, to our standards, the very rare villas located on large plots by the sea fulfil a major tick in their evaluation. A wide view over the lagoon (villa Las Brisas) or a villa placed fairly remotely from the beach and direct neighbours enhancing privacy, hence the luxury of intimate moments. (Villa Taïssa).
3. Volumes and interior space
To some extent, large living areas, ample bedrooms and roomy bathrooms are directly enjoyable characteristics, especially in villas having large accommodation capacities of ten and above where, at some moments of the day, each guest needs his or her own private space. (Villa Aura, Villa Moana & Villa Varuna).
4. Outdoor living areas – The Mauritian way of life
Contemporary villas always look great in a catalogue, but do they suit every context? Not always. The art of living in Mauritius is being outside, or rather in between the inside and the outside, in that sacred area called a veranda. Verandas bring the perfect blend of intimacy and shelter with the great feeling of being outdoor. By daytime, they protect from heat and sun, in evenings they warm up the ambiance. By day or by night, they are the ideal place for sharing drinks and meals. Gazebos and pool-houses are fair alternatives, especially when enhanced by decks and terraces. (Villa Aura, Villa Bahia, Villa Taïssa, Villa Las Brisas & Villa Morine).
5. Quality of the building
Perfect proportions, directional perspectives, proper zoning, clever architectural planning with proper cross-ventilation along with well-finished walls, floors and ceilings, are add-ons to the daily comfort of guests, while the perfect integration of the house within its natural environment is a feel-good factor. (Villa Morine & Villa Aura).
6. Furniture, amenities and equipment.
Design, yet comfortable furniture sets, great paintings and posters, balanced colour-schemes perfectly-fitted kitchens and bathrooms, hermetic flush-doors and soft-closing drawers are comfort to the senses. (Villa Aura, Villa Moana and Villa Las Brisas).
7. Service
Since daily cleaning and cooking services are a standard for all the holiday villas we propose for rent, the service at luxury villas is not necessarily enhanced. However, their zoning and volumes are better adapted for the hiring of chefs, that bring service to another level, close to hotel-like services, without the fussy protocols and the standardisation.
8. Region and location
All our guests would like the convenience of nearby restaurants and other food outlets. Others attach importance to remoteness, quietness, tranquillity. Being subject to the basic laws of economy, it is merely impossible, on such a small island to have both. One exception is Villa Bahia. Despite being located in busy Grand Baie, it perfectly combines proximity and tranquillity. Because it is easier to drive to a supermarket than keep a whole village quiet, our selection favours quietness, authenticity, tranquillity, the star criteria of all our luxury rentals.
