There’s a buzz about Grand Baie! It’s good and bad news; it all depends upon what type of holiday you want to spend.

Is Grand Baie too touristy? Certainly; even for someone looking for a distracting, touristy place. The pockets of authenticity are not easy to find, especially since the massive installation of expatriates, mainly from France and South-Africa. Tourism and immigration resulted in a far over-built and very busy area with almost deficient infrastructure, to the image of the permanent traffic jams during daytime.

We would not say that Grand Baie should be totally avoided as it fits many travellers’ expectations for its fairly lively and happy vibes. Also, for being the region with the highest concentration of restaurants, by far. The variety of cuisines, specialities and the wide range of styles and prices makes it a non-negligible culinary destination.

Apart from the grand bay itself, its lagoons and open seas display a wide array of hues which invites to an all-day gazing, while the outer islands punctuating the horizon, accentuate the ocean’s immensity.

But there’s an issue! Driving all along the coast does not offer more than a few glimpses over the sea, as the chain of walls delimiting the properties, mainly beach villas, prevent views and access to the beaches and lagoons.
