Only a few coastal areas have developed into tourist villages with a relatively high concentration of shops and restaurants. These include Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, Flic en Flac and Rivière Noire. Holiday rentals in these areas are therefore closer to shops and restaurants than those in the purely residential areas of Roche, Poste Lafayette or Pointe d’Esny. However, it is essential to understand that these areas are generally lively thus noisy, and very popular – or ‘touristy’ – and that their charm and authenticity have, at best, been transformed. Trou d’Eau Douce is an exception to this. The choice between tranquillity, authenticity and proximity to restaurants is therefore a clear-cut one. Possible compromises include either finding one of the few quiet and private beach villas that are sufficiently off the main roads – thus requiring a hire car – or splitting your stay between two different areas.
